The 2024 Get Out the Vote Campaign: You Can Make a Difference

The presidential primary season is almost finished. Now is the time to gather your family and friends, review and discuss congressional and presidential platforms, and most importantly, make plans to vote in this year’s fall presidential elections.

Candidate positions at both the executive and legislative levels of government, particularly on important issues such as increased federal funding for the performing arts, arts education, social security, taxes, reproductive rights, and civil and human rights, could not be in starker contrast.

In the May International Musician, the AFM International Executive Board made a compelling argument about why the board and the AFM, as an affiliated organized labor organization, should support the Joe Biden administration in its bid for re-election. The article pointed out myriad reasons for labor’s overall success and progress as a result of President Biden’s leadership in the past three and a half years.

For union creative professionals to maintain those achievements and build on that progress, it is imperative we work diligently with our brothers and sisters in the movement to help “get out the vote” (GOTV) for the November 2024 presidential election.

In addition to GOTV activities with your AFM local, AFM members are strongly encouraged to partner with their local AFL-CIO Central Labor Councils to participate in union-sponsored door knocking, leafleting, labor rallies, and phone banking campaigns.

You may also volunteer with your local county election office to serve as election judges, voter registration officials, poll watchers, election challengers, election observers, and election ballot counters.

With a little weekend volunteer service, you can make a considerable difference in the number of voters who make it to the polls and help protect the critical gains we’ve achieved.

The AFM President’s Office and Legislative-Political Office have asked for your help over the years. We thank you for answering our call. With all that is at risk in 2024, your union asks you once again to step up and help us continue to make a difference in and for the entire creative community and help to ensure the viability of the arts in America.
