Veteran orchestrator and trombonist Chris McDonald of Local 257 (Nashville, TN) has been an accomplished composer and arranger of big band music for decades. It’s About Time, his ninth studio album, is a contemporary jazz odyssey of eight original compositions and arrangements of two cover songs. The album features an all-star big band with a number of special guest soloists. McDonald, a longtime session musician, has become a go-to brass and strings arranger for pop and orchestral compositions. Here, he showcases many of Nashville’s world-class jazz players.

In McDonald’s hands, the Yes classic “Roundabout” and Boz Scaggs’ “You Can Have Me Anytime” are deftly reimagined for the jazz idiom. Originals include “Stranger Danger,” featuring Jimmy Pankow of Local 10-208 (Chicago, IL), and songs with a Latin influence, “Bondade Mora Aqui” and “Corean Fantasy.” Moody ballads are covered with renderings of “If the Things We Said Were True” and the Basie-inspired nightclub vibe of “Just Take My Hand.” Jazz-rock influences that would be at home with the likes of Steely Dan include the epic “A Song Is but a Dream.” “You Can Have Me Anytime,” co-written by Scaggs of Local 6 (San Francisco, CA) and David Foster of Local 47 (Los Angeles, CA), features trumpeter Steve Patrick.

Local 257 players are legion and include Mark Douthit (alto sax); Roy Agee, Barry Green, and Roger Bissell (trombone); Emmanuel Echem, Mike Haynes, and Jeff Bailey (trumpet); Gary Lunn, Bryan Allen, Jim Ferguson, and Craig Nelson (bass); Pat Coil (piano and Hammond); Tom Hemby, Andy Reiss, Mark Baldwin, and Pat Bergeson (guitar); Jeff Coffin (sax and flute) and Wendy Moten (vocalist). Drummers include Danny Gottlieb, Bob Mater, Dennis Chambers of Local 40-543 (Baltimore, MD), Jordan Perlson, Keith Carlock, and percussionist Glen Caruba.
