Now is the right time to become an American Federation of Musicians member. From ragtime to rap, from the early phonograph to today's digital recordings, the AFM has been there for its members. And now there are more benefits available to AFM members than ever before, including a multi-million dollar pension fund, excellent contract protection, instrument and travelers insurance, work referral programs and access to licensed booking agents to keep you working.

As an AFM member, you are part of a membership of more than 80,000 musicians. Experience has proven that collective activity on behalf of individuals with similar interests is the most effective way to achieve a goal. The AFM can negotiate agreements and administer contracts, procure valuable benefits and achieve legislative goals. A single musician has no such power.

The AFM has a proud history of managing change rather than being victimized by it. We find strength in adversity, and when the going gets tough, we get creative - all on your behalf.

Like the industry, the AFM is also changing and evolving, and its policies and programs will move in new directions dictated by its members. As a member, you will determine these directions through your interest and involvement. Your membership card will be your key to participation in governing your union, keeping it responsive to your needs and enabling it to serve you better. Argyle Theatre Musicians Win First-Time Contract

  -

Musicians of Local 802 (New York City) who work for the Argyle Theatre in Babylon, New York, have won a first-time union contract, achieving a wage increase of 17%, job security, pension contributions, a prohibition on virtual orchestra technology, and more.

The newly renovated and historic Argyle, which dates back to 1921, opened in 2018 with a full roster of musicals, concerts, comedy, and other performances. The theater offers six annual main stage productions, with shows this season that include Jersey Boys, Fiddler on the Roof, and The Music Man.

Late last year, with the assistance of Local 802 Recording Vice President Harvey Mars and Local 802 Business Representative Peter Voccola, four Local 802 musicians, Brian Schatz, Pete Averso, Josh Ganci, and Andrew Warren, joined the bargaining team bolstering its negotiating power.

In a joint statement, the musicians say, “We have been working alongside our Local 802 representatives to secure a fair and equitable agreement and are very happy to see it come to fruition. It’s an important step toward unifying the top musicians on Long Island and we look forward to continuing to attract top talent at the Argyle Theatre.”

Local 802 has several collective bargaining agreements with regional theaters on Long Island, including Gateway Playhouse in Bellport and John W. Engeman Theater in Northport.
